“Quit Your Job, Work is a Sham” by Ted Rall

Filed under: General — semi @ 3:27 pm

Longtime readers of this website may recall that I am a fan of Ted Rall. In 1995, Ted published an article in a now defunct magazine titled “Quit Your Job, Work is a Sham“. I remember seeing photocopies of it posted in my workplace, and it really spoke to me, primarily because my job sucked. Much has changed since then — Ted has become a very successful writer and cartoonist, jobs are being outsourced to the other side of the planet, and I love my current job — but it is still a worthwhile read.

Thanks to “an obsessive blogger’s efforts at transcription“, that work is available online for the first time. First, wow, I can’t believe some guy typed that all in by hand, and second, give it a read, it’s worth your time.

HELLO WORLD!

Filed under: General — semi @ 10:32 pm

In early 2001, I started Semi Truths as a forum for my own writing. I have always wanted to be a columnist, but this little thing called “a regular paycheck” kept beckoning. So, I started writing on the web…

A year later, I saw these things called “Blogs”. Interesting. Instead of sweating over long essays whenever I could find the time (no more than two or three times a month), I could write short, pithy comments interspersed with longer essays. Cool. So Semi Truths became a blog.

Back then, though, the most adaptable tools for creating Weblogs were the same kind of tools we used to create all websites: you create all your pages locally, then upload them to your web server. Worse, when you’re dealing with .XML and CSS, it was often impossible to even see the results until they’re actually uploaded onto the site.

I stopped posting regularly onto Semi Truths late in 2003. The site foundered, I moved onto other things, and blogging evolved from a rarified form of expression among technical elites into something that everybody with a keyboard could do. In other words, it grew up.

Now there are new tools, new ways to do this, and I find myself drawn back in. When I have room here, I will list some of my favorite bloggers and why, but for now I just need to roll my sleeves up and get some words out.

It’s good to be back.

ROLLING OUT THE NEW SEMI TRUTHS

Welcome to the new SEMI TRUTHS. After a too-long hiatus, I am jumping feet first into the newest trend in website rendering, a Web Log. For those not completely up-to-date on cutting-edge technology (“Hi Mom!“), gone are the days of simple, static pages. Web logs are an entire content management system which will allow the content provider (i.e., yours truly) to waste even more time figuring out how to make this text appear just right on the web page. (In other words, if I were still in school, “The dog ate my homework” has now been replaced by “A bit of poorly managed code has rendered my entire text unreadable“).

The main point is that, instead of taking my time to craft a carefully constructed and considered narrative, thoughtfully deconstructing important issues of the day, I can now casually sit back and, metaphorically speaking, just hurl crap at my computer screen and see what sticks!

On the plus side, now you, the reader, can also instantly add unexpurgated comments to what you see here.

Thank you for visiting my site. If you are new here, please follow the link to my early columns to give you an idea of my politics, my sense of humor, and the shaky foundation upon which this new house is being hastily cobbled. Please bear with me as I figure out this new way of doing things (if you can’t bear with me, then please select another woodland creature of your choice) and you will be rewarded (?) with my views on Politics, Technology, Word Usage, Everyday Reviews, and even the occasional SEMI-Biographical note.

Stay tuned…!
