I am pleased to have this opportunity to highlight the great writing of all these really marvelous people. I apologize if I missed anybody that I like&#8230;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/semitrue.com\/blog\/wp-includes\/images\/smilies\/icon_smile.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For a serious journalistic review of the Sorenson Institute&#8217;s 2006 Blogging Summit, read Bob Gibson&#8217;s terrific article in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/dailyprogress.com\/servlet\/Satellite?pagename=CDP\/MGArticle\/CDP_BasicArticle&#038;c=MGArticle&#038;cid=1149188577371\">Daily Progress<\/a> followed by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ricksincerethoughts.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/more-on-virginia-bloggers-summit.html\">Rick Sincere<\/a>&#8216;s thoughtful analysis. When you&#8217;re done, read <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/aperfectcandidate.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/17\/seenheard-at-blogger-summit-festivities\/\">Not Chuck Robb<\/a>&#8216;s hilarious post.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/honestycounts.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/blogging-from-summit.html\">Honesty Counts<\/a> is a blog that focuses on Virgina politics specifically and is another one of those that I learned about at the conference. Lisa is apparently a morning person and wrote a thoughtful Day One essay on Saturday morning <em>before breakfast&#8230;! <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Of course, Waldo had us all beat, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/waldo.jaquith.org\/blog\/2006\/06\/blog-summit-day-1\/\">posting his thoughts<\/a> before going to bed Friday night (and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/waldo.jaquith.org\/blog\/2006\/06\/blog-summit-day-1\/#comment-8873\">commenting again<\/a> in the morning), then another trenchant <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/waldo.jaquith.org\/blog\/2006\/06\/blog-summit-day-2\/\">summary of Day Two<\/a>. Waldo also generously created a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/vablogsummit\/\">Flickr group<\/a> with plenty of pictures.<\/li>\n<li><em>Blue Dog<\/em> (who, despite his moniker, is clearly not a Democrat) posts a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/obiwanbluedoggie.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/not-creigh-deeds.html\">Day One take<\/a> on &#8220;<em>the Liberal Democratic BlogFest &#8230; in the People&#8217;s Republic of Charlottesville<\/em>&#8220;, then caps Day Two with a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/obiwanbluedoggie.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/day-ii.html\">Sorensen Blog Conference quiz<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/shaunkenney.com\/2006\/06\/transparency-authenticity-containment.htm\"><em>Shaun Kenney<\/em><\/a> is an engaging speaker and  carried his interesting talk over to his blog. I generally disagree with his politics, but I like him personally.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/beltwayblogroll.nationaljournal.com\/archives\/2006\/06\/a_recap_of_satu.php\">Panelist <em>Danny Glover<\/em><\/a> (no, <em>not<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danny_Glover\">that one<\/a>)  was also kind enough to post his talk on his blog.<\/li>\n<li><em>F.T. Rea<\/em> was another panelist on the <em>Blogging and Journalism<\/em> session. He posts both on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/slantblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/bloggers-filling-vacuum.html\">that session<\/a> and his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/slantblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/post-summit-thoughts.html\">post-summit thoughts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>During the session on <em>Ethics and Blogging<\/em>, many respondents mentioned the absent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/jaded_jd.typepad.com\/the_jaded_jd\/2006\/06\/just_because_yo.html\"><em>Jaded JD<\/em><\/a>, enough so that, even though he was not present, he responded with a well-written piece about why he wishes to remain a pseudonymous blogger. I like his explanation so much that I am listing it here, even though he does not particularly care to be included in Carnivals.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/commonwealthcommonsense.typepad.com\/commonwealthcommonsense\/2006\/06\/who_is_that_mas.html\"><em>Commonwealth Commonsense<\/em><\/a> offers his own take on pseudonymous blogging and hosts an interesting discussion. It was good to meet you, Bob.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/heartlandofvirginia.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/blog-o-rama.html\">Mark Brooks<\/a> is a disarmingly smart guy who is completely hilarious when he&#8217;s trying not to be.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/onemanstrash.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/back-from-conference-i-just-arrived.html\"><em>One Man&#8217;s Trash<\/em><\/a> sadly had to skip Friday, but posts decent reviews of the Saturday workshops. I was not previously familiar with this blog, but I like it. The format of the site is a little crunched (as Wado has pointed out to me, however, nobody visits websites anymore, they just read the RSS feed), but I like his writing. Norm is a sensible conservative who is perfectly willing to take on &#8220;don&#8217;t-tax-but-do-spend&#8221; Republicans and who doesn&#8217;t devote his time to just bashing liberals. I hope we get another chance to speak.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/jeffersonmammoth.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/blog-summit.html\">Jefferson Mammoth<\/a> is another pseudonymous blogger. Did we meet? Neither one of us may know. Reading his blog, he is clearly another rational conservative.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingkaine.com\/userDiary.do?personId=19\">Josh Chernila<\/a> is the first person I met at the conference. He is well-spoken and informed and immediately made me feel at ease. He is also a prolific blogger and a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/waldo.jaquith.org\/blog\/2006\/06\/webb-lowell-josh\/\">political force to be reckoned with<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Brian Patton<\/em>, who blogs on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/brianpatton.org\/2006\/06\/18\/blogging-conference\/\">BrianPatton.org<\/a> under the pseudonym &#8220;Brian Patton&#8221;, was too tired to post a full review. Brian also bears a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/vaprogressive.com\/?p=859\">startling resemblance<\/a> to Creigh Deeds.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/vaprogressive.com\/?p=857\">Virginia Progressive<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d who, despite the name, is male  \u00e2\u20ac\u201d is also too tired to write much. These young guys were just up too late&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kentonngo.com\/750volts\">Kenton Ngo<\/a>, also one of the youngest bloggers there, wrote a long a thoughtful piece that brought together all the disparate threads of the summit into a comprehensive analysis full of witty prognostications &#8230; or, he might have, but as of this writing, his site is hosed.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/semitrue.com\/blog\/wp-includes\/images\/smilies\/icon_sad.gif\" \/><\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vaextrainnings.com\/2006\/06\/17\/blogapalooza-clearasil-generation-meet-the-metamucil-generation\/\">Dels. Kris Amundson and Bob Brink<\/a> marvelled at the relative youth of everyone at the summit (clearly, not me) but despite their self-proclaimed dotage, they were full of energy and exuberance.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/jlmcharlottesville.blogspot.com\/\">Jennifer<\/a> has been too busy to post her thoughts on the summit, but writes that she is enjoying <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/semitrue.com\/blog\/2006\/06\/21\/vablog06-5\/#comment-33\">mine<\/a>. Fair enough! She&#8217;s a charming woman and writes a smart blog.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/changeservant.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/2006-va-political-bloggers-conference.html\"><em>ChangeServant<\/em><\/a> posts a very thoughtful review of the summit and addresses a concern that I <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/semitrue.com\/blog\/2006\/06\/21\/vablog06-5\/#cville2\">shared<\/a>: why does there need to be a conservative counter-summit? That, as it turns out, is a mischaracterization, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/imnotemeril.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/from-claire-guthrie-gastanaga.html\"><em>I&#8217;m Not Emeril<\/em><\/a> clears the air and provides more information about the August &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs-united.blogspot.com\/\"><em>C&#8217;Ville, Too<\/em><\/a>&#8221; in Martinsville.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/baconsrebellion.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/virginia-blogging-summit-ii.html\">Bacon&#8217;s Rebellion<\/a> was unable to attend, but provided more details on the supposed rift between &#8220;liberal&#8221; and &#8220;conservative&#8221; bloggers.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/extrememortman.com\/politics\/virginia-gov-2009-the-blogger-primary\/\">Extreme Mortman<\/a> likened the conference to YearlyKos, and noted that &#8221; <em>the presence of Bolling and McDonnell at UVA sends the clear message  that bloggers will play an increasingly important role in the  Commonwealth as the next campaign unfolds<\/em>.&#8221; Hear hear!<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cathousechat.com\/cathouse_chat\/2006\/06\/sorenson_blogge.html\"><em>CatHouse Chat<\/em><\/a>, a conservative blogger, really enjoyed &#8220;<em>meeting some gracious and very charming people from the other side of the aisle<\/em>&#8220;. We enjoyed meeting you too, Romeocat&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><em>Conaway Haskins<\/em> is impressive in person, and reviews the conference in a thoughtful essay on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/southofthejames.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/20\/blogology-quick-hits-from-the-sorensen-bloggers-summit\/\">South of the James<\/a>. However, my favorite line is not in the original posting, but in a response to a comment when he adds &#8220;<em>I see myself as a writer who blogs, not a blogger who writes<\/em>&#8220;. Conaway cross-posted the same article on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/baconsrebellion.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/blogology-quick-hits-from-sorensen.html\">Bacon&#8217;s Rebellion<\/a> and spurred some additional interesting discussions on blogging and ethics. This week, the Sorenson Institute <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.sorenseninstitute.org\/blog\/_archives\/2006\/6\/22\/2048518.html\">profiles Conaway <\/a>. Excellent choice.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m saving the best for last. Vivian Paige is my new best friend. She is smart, funny, outspoken, and was the brightest light in a room full of shining people. She wrote her <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/vivianpaige.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/17\/blog-summit-day-2\/\">impressions of the conference<\/a> and followed up a few days later with a discourse on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/vivianpaige.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/21\/fallout-from-the-blog-conference\/\">ethics and journalism<\/a>. In the middle of all this trenchant analysis, she also wrote a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/vivianpaige.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/18\/fathers-day-2006\/\">Father&#8217;s Day tribute to her own Dad<\/a> that had me blubbering like a baby. If you <em>ever<\/em> get a chance to spend time with Vivian, do it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"sorenson\"><\/a>UPDATE: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.sorenseninstitute.org\/blog\/Events\">Sorenson has posted a page with links<\/a> to this and other Blog Summit recaps, including links to audio files of the guest speakers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been reviewing the Sorenson VA Bloggers Summit all week and I&#8217;m still not done, but it is also my honor to host the Blog Carnival this week.
