THE BARBS OF CVILLE
The University of Virginia Center for Politics “promotes the value of politics and seeks to improve civic education and increase civic participation through comprehensive research, pragmatic analysis, and innovative educational programs.” It also, apparently, has a wicked keen sense of irony, for on the eve of an American-led war in the mideast and the complete breakdown of our moral leadership, the Center is sponsoring a National Symposium on Political Humor.
- March 15 – May 4: “Political Cartoons: A Tribute to Herblock“ at the UVA Art Museum (with reception on March 28)
- March 18: Mo Rocca, The Daily Show correspondent with the Center for Politics Director, Larry J. Sabato.
- April 8: An evening with Lewis Black & Will Durst
- April 15: “The Politics of Political Humor“, a panel discussion with political writers and cartoonists.
- April 23: “Simpsons Mania: Behind the Scenes with America’s Favorite Family“ with series producer Mike Reiss.
If you are anywhere near Charlottesville in March or April, attending any or all of these events could be a real tonic for what’s happening to our country. I’ll be there, and will report here.

REGISTERED MEMBERS ONLY?
I cannot remember the last time I actually bought a piece of software “off the shelf”. Nowadays, we think nothing of downloading an application, testing it for a trial period, then deleting it after it has expired or registering it online with a credit card.
I did that very thing today, testing a new software application then choosing to register it. Here is the email I received in response (only the names have been changed to protect the unintentionally funny):
We have received your registration application for (software). It may take a few days to process. In the meantime, please be assured that your tool will continue to function normally.
Well, that’s a relief!
