OF PAINTED WINGS AND GIANT RINGS

At Cornell University in 1959, a nineteen year old student named Lenny Lipton sat in the library at Willard Straight Hall and read a poem by Ogden Nash about a “realio, trulio, little pet dragon“. As anyone who has ever been nineteen knows, it is a serious and sentimental age. Lenny later found himself thinking about dragons and lamenting the end of his childhood as he walked down the hill to the city of Ithaca to meet a friend for dinner. No one was home at his friend’s apartment, so he just let himself in (remember, this is 1959) and while he was waiting, sat down at a typewriter that belonged to his friend’s roommate, Peter. Lenny wrote down his own poem about a dragon and lost childhood fantasies and left the sheet in the typewriter.

Peter, a performer and concert organizer at Cornell, found the poem, added some words, and set it to music. A few years later, when Peter joined the emerging folk music scene in Greenwich Village, he founded a group with two other friends and that piece quickly became part of their repertoire. Peter tracked Lenny down to give him co-writer credit before the group recorded and released the song on vinyl. By early 1963, their record reached #2 on the popular charts and has been sung thousands of times since. Why, you probably know most of the lyrics yourself…

WEARING DOWNS RESISTANCE

Filed under: Politics — semi @ 2:31 pm

It’s been a Good News/Bad News kind of week. The bad news is that wearing the wrong t-shirt could get you arrested. The good news is that local hippies may come to your aid. MSNBC has an update on the t-shirt flap in Schenectady:

Protestors gather at Crossgates Mall

The management at Crossgates Mall Wednesday asked the Guilderland Police Department to drop the trespassing charges against a Selkirk man. This came after about 100 protestors descended on Crossgates Mall that afternoon. Their “Mall Walk for Peace” protested the arrest of 60-year-old Stephen Downs, who was charged with trespassing Monday night when he wouldn’t leave the mall after he refused to remove his T-shirt bearing a peace message.

REGISTERED MEMBERS ONLY?

I cannot remember the last time I actually bought a piece of software “off the shelf”. Nowadays, we think nothing of downloading an application, testing it for a trial period, then deleting it after it has expired or registering it online with a credit card.

I did that very thing today, testing a new software application then choosing to register it. Here is the email I received in response (only the names have been changed to protect the unintentionally funny):

We have received your registration application for (software). It may take a few days to process. In the meantime, please be assured that your tool will continue to function normally.

Well, that’s a relief!

MASS ERRORS

This one will make you do a double-take. It is a very clever parody of the ubiquitous HTTP 404 error page tied in to current world events. Follow the link, then look at it closely.
